PLANTING SEEDS FOR THE FUTURE…
ANNOUNCING THE SUNFLOWER INITIATIVE’S ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN
As graduates of a women’s college, we take great pride in knowing that our support of The Sunflower Initiative and its annual $10,000 Harriet Fitzgerald Scholarships provides an opportunity for more women to experience the many benefits of a women’s college education. Several years ago, that pride swelled when The Sunflower Initiative’s Board of Directors voted to establish an Endowment Fund to ensure that the Harriet Fitzgerald Scholarships will remain available indefinitely. As honorary co-chairs of the Endowment Campaign, we have been witness to incredible generosity, with donations and pledges ranging from $250 to $100,000, and today we are thrilled to announce that we have reached 85 percent of our $1 million Endowment Fund goal!
This progress is the culmination of years of fundraising, and we were overjoyed recently when we received an unexpected donation of $100,000 from Joan Jennings Howard, Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, Class of 1952, that brought the total of gifts and commitments to just over $850,000.

Having experienced the value of a women’s college education herself, Joan knows the overall importance of women’s colleges to the educational landscape. Upon hearing of The Sunflower Initiative, Joan immediately knew that a gift to its Endowment Campaign was an impactful way to continue her long-time support of the role women’s colleges play in our society, telling her children, “That’s the organization I want to support.”
As we close in on our $1 million Endowment Campaign goal, we are asking you to support The Sunflower Initiative and the long-term viability of the Harriet Fitzgerald Scholarships. The generous contributions of our annual donors have allowed us to award $210,000 in scholarships to date and have encouraged us to initiate a permanent endowment. Your donation now to the Endowment Fund is vital to ensuring that the Sunflower Initiative can continue to support women in their pursuit of a women’s college education for many years to come. Please join us in this worthy endeavor by following this link and making your pledge or gift today!
