Our Commitment
The Sunflower Initiative is committed to ensuring that our website is accessible to people with disabilities. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, which defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with various disabilities.
Conformance Status
This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. “Partially conformant” means that some content does not yet fully meet the standard. We are actively conducting audits and making improvements on an ongoing basis.
What We’ve Done
We have taken the following steps to improve accessibility:
- Added keyboard navigation support and visible focus indicators throughout the site
- Provided meaningful alternative text for images
- Ensured all interactive controls (buttons, menus, forms) have descriptive accessible labels
- Used proper heading structure to support screen reader navigation
- Added a skip-to-content link to allow keyboard users to bypass repetitive navigation
- Marked the current page in navigation menus for screen reader users
- Ensured all links within article content are visually distinguished by underline
Known Limitations
We are aware of the following areas that are still being addressed:
- Color contrast: Some sections built with our page builder tool use inline color styles that are difficult to override. We are working through these systematically.
- Third-party content: Embedded third-party tools (such as our newsletter subscription form) may not fully meet WCAG standards. We have reported these issues to the respective vendors.
- Legacy content: Some older articles may contain formatting that does not fully meet current standards. We are reviewing and updating this content over time.
